Flyfish Montana Part Two

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Spring creeks have a kind of charm that appeals to a lot of flyfishermen. Somehow Man and Nature are brought closer together as compare to larger rivers. This was how I felt when I first fished the spring creeks in Montana. Maybe its due to the size, they are not as intimidating as the larger rivers. But do not let the size fool you as they do produce some amazing catches.

There are a number of nice spring creeks in and around Yellowstone Park. Most of them are easily accessible by car. Some of these spring creeks are privately owned and runs through private property. There is a fee charged for every rod and only a number of limited anglers per day. Which I think it’s a good way to control the fishing pressure.

These spring creeks are small, crystal clear meadow streams loaded with beautiful, wild fish. These streams bubble up from underground aquifers, and are unaffected by runoff like other rivers and streams. Their rich waters, flowing at a constant 12-15 degrees Celsius, produce dependable and often heavy hatches, all season long.

I like to fish spring creeks, firstly they are small not intimidating, easily wadable, splendid sight fishing and a real test of your skills in terms of approach, presentation, casting etc. Its challenging both for beginners and expert alike, it really test what you have learned or read about flyfishing. Not to mention the hike along the banks and among the grazing cattle, which is equally pleasant.

Most of the fishes average from 3-5 pounds from 12-18 inches with the occasional trophy, considering the size of the river which is pretty good. With the prolific hatches and constant water temperature its ideal living conditions for the trouts.

All the trouts are wild with splendid brilliant colours. Hatches are prolific with all the insects and flies you can find in a typical fly tying book, from nymphs to dry flies to scuds to midges. You can be spending a lot of time standing in a beautiful place pondering on your flybox on what flies to use.

Most of the time you don’t need a guide for spring creeks as the water is not that big and easily accessible and wadable different from huge rivers where the guide needs to row the boat and know the whereabouts of the trouts habitat. Spring creeks are a good place to test your own skills on how well you understand trouts in their own environment. Every nooks and crannies, everything you learn from books and videos apply here. Streamcraft skills and technique is especially important in small size spring creeks.

Equipment and gears used can be shorter rods and finer tippets as the trouts here tend to be more wary and spooky. Longer and finer tippets may be required.

1

Spring creeks are wonderful place to start for beginners and kids as well as for the more experience flyfishermen. The terrain is ever changing and you will always be faced with a different situation. The approach, the cast, the strike, the hook up, the joy and the frustration. This is what flyfishing is all about.

ChinaFishing.com is honored with the title of one of the “2009 Most Characteristic Top 10 Vertical Interactive Websites in China”

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

e6b5b7e5b3a1e59bbee78987

The 4th China Webmasters Annual Meeting (2009) was held on May 17 at Great Wall Sheraton Hotel in Beijing, and this is also the webmasters gathering for celebration of the 8th anniversary of founding jointly organized by Comsenz and im286.com. With “insisting on growth” as topic, the following was deeply discussed: facing the global financial crisis, how to realize stable reservation and rapid development for China webmasters by making use of the good basis of the industry?

The arrangement of the annual meeting was different with the past 3 annual meetings: besides a main meeting place, three branch meeting places for summit forum were arranged for special discussion on the three industrial topics- SNS and open platform, local and vertical community marketing, and host domain name market. About 100 honored guests from various fields joined in the speech and discussion. In the meantime, the liaison men of Webmasters club all over the country came to the meeting to give keynote speech on Internet development of various areas and dynamic behaviors of webmasters. About 1, 000 dot-commers and webmasters participated in the annual meeting.

Besides the communication on industrial dynamics, operation topics and technical discussion (necessarily performed on past annual meetings), the idea of “insisting on growth” was particularly advocated on this annual meeting. Since the second half of 2008, the adjustment of real economy caused by global financial crisis provides all industries with stern challenges. It is lucky that China’s Internet industry is one of the industries affected little by the global financial crisis. The relevant data shows that China’s Internet industry successfully realized the historic leap from 200 million netizens and 300 million netizens in late 2008 and early 2009. China’s Internet advertising also enjoys a rapid growth: increase to 13 billion in 2008 from 9 billion in 2007. It is predicted that there will be an increase of above 35% in 2009.

Many multinational corporations and famous enterprises released the negative performance expectation at the beginning of 2009, and a lot of enterprises even cut staff for cost down, so as to resist the performance decline and loss caused by income reduction. Some enterprises affected little by the financial crisis also controlled cost by reducing expenditure through various methods. Enterprises are trying to reducing cost, and ordinary people also have a cautious attitude about spending money. The emotion, nerve and discretion of each person are greatly challenged under such a kind of uneasy market sentiment.

However, the Internet industry has a completely different status in 2009. Chinas Internet industry is facing a more diversified competitive situation. Besides traditional portals, search engine and online games, community open platform and SNS are also leading a innovation trend. Netizens are performing interactive communication through more frequent use of Internet, and SNS-related Internet new opportunities are approaching us. Therefore, even if under the adverse macroeconomic environment, China’s Internet industry, which has a good basis, still achieving good development and performance, becoming a flag exhibiting “good development” of China’s economy.

On the annual meeting, ChinaFishing.com was honored with the title of one of the “2009 Most Characteristic Top 10 Vertical Interactive Websites in China”, and it is the only website in fishing gear field awarded with this title.

Flyfish Montana Part One Drifting the BigHorn

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

dscf2661

“Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world’s great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs.”-Norman Maclean.

These words were etched in my mind for 10 years since I first read the book. Although I have fly fish in different countries and places I have always wanted to visit Montana.

It was a trip that I have always dream of, to visit and flyfish the state of Montana. Its not very often we get this kind of opportunity to flyfish with a group of friends in “trout country”. 6 of us from different parts of the world gather to flyfish and enjoy Montana for a long weekend.

It was the first for everyone to flyfish in Montana although some of us have been flyfishing for 10 years while there are others that are only couple of months. The adrenalin and excitement was hard to conceal in everyone. We could hardly wait for the day to arrive.

After some weary travelling across the globe, we were finally rested in the fully equipped cabin. I had a hard time falling asleep maybe due to the excitement, the jet lag and time difference. Slowly I fell into dreamland.

The smell of bacon sizzling in the pan woke me. Today is the day where we would be drifting down the BigHorn River. After a sumptuous breakfast of bacon, eggs and toast, everyone was starting to gear up waiting for the guides to pick us up.

The BigHorn River is a tailwater river with the dam above which helps to provide constant temperature and abundant insect life. The guide launches the boat and make sure everyone was comfortable before we start drifting. We were to drift the whole 13 mile of the river stopping at intervals for breaks and fishing from the banks. The weather, the scenery, the clarity of the water, everything was just perfect for a fishing day.

The guide help us rigged up the flies and guided us where we should start casting. A 2 fly setup with an indicator on, we were to drift together with the river flow keeping our eyes on the indicator bobbing on the surface of the river. It wasn’t long before we start catching fish. It was fantastic! Sound of the reel screeching was music to our ears. Our heart beat stopped every time the indicator went down. Every fish fought well, takes were aggressive. Average fish caught were 3-4lbs rainbows and browns with the occasional 6lbs hen.

The following 2 days we were on our own with 2 rented boats taking turns rowing. We did the same thing as we had done the previous day with the guide except this time we were on our own, tying our own rigs, undoing our own wind knots which somehow seems like having the guide around was so much easier. We had a fabulous time nevertheless. The laughter, the companionship, the comraderie with fly rods in arms all seeking a common goal, a Montana trout.

Trouts are amazing creatures, they are so beautiful with their speckled spots, colors and proportion, so delicate yet strong. It was just meant to be.

I have travelled halfway across the globe just so I can feel the beauty in them again. Having not fished for trout for a long time, this was like rekindling the passion, this is what flyfishing is about.

Besides the awesome fishing, we get a feel of what the “Big Sky Country” actually is, the huge expanse of the sky that stretches endlessly, the scenic mountains, the cool, clear rivers and the wildlife. Everything was just picture perfect.

A memorable 3 day at the BigHorn. Plenty of fishes caught and released. Many laughters and experience exchanged. Something to look back when we are old standing by the river alone waving the stick.

On a personal note, it may not be the Blackfoot River but it was like paying homage to Norman Maclean and I thank him again for writing such a good novel.
